10 on the 10th

Some lovely ladies invited me to be a part of their blog circle where they share 10 photos each month on the 10th. My daughter (our only child) just turned one less than two weeks ago so of course I have her first year on my mind and knew I wanted to share 10 photos of her. I went through several ideas for categories including "favorites" but ultimately just picked 10 photos I felt like sharing a story about today.

Head over to Katrina Kennedy's post next, then continue from there to see what everyone is sharing this month.

Valencia has loved taking baths since her very first one in the hospital. In this photo she has only received a sponge bath, but now she loves to sit in the tub and splash and play with her rubber duck. I love this photo because it simply shows her beauty.

I read a couple of different books about sleep training when I was expecting and it paid off! Valencia was a very easy baby to teach to sleep. She first slept through the night at 5 weeks old and from there we helped her to learn the necessary sleep skills to where she sleeps usually from 7:00 pm to 8:00 am and sometimes longer! She did have a bit of trouble at the end of December and again at the end of January due to illness but she has slept through the night pretty much every single night since 2 months old!!!!! Such a blessing!!!! (I want to take this photo again and compare how much she has grown!)

This is a sweet, lovely picture of my darling girl.  But the reality is that she was undressed for the umpteenth time that day having spit up all over everything AGAIN. Her spit up was out of control. I remember one time we were Facetiming with Daddy and Mount Valencia erupted over and over again and it scared me and I was bawling and I called my aunt and she and my uncle immediately went to the store to buy some hypoallergenic formula for us to try. Ultimately she just had to grow out of it, but it was awful. I didn't dare feed her at church or anywhere for fear she would spit up (she spit up on the exact same spot on the church carpet several times) and it was easier to feed her from a Boppy pillows than on my lap so I didn't have to change my clothes afterward. Boy, am I glad that stage is over! I got to feed her from my lap again- until she decided she was big enough to hold her own bottle, that is!

Up until she was about six months old Valencia did not like to be around crowds. We would attend parties and go to restaurants and she would cry and cry. On this particular day we put her in her first swimsuit (this photo still makes me swoon- is it not the cutest thing you have ever seen??) and put her in an inflatable frog in my aunt's pool. She rode around quietly at first, but didn't last long and when my aunt tried to take her inside so Spencer and I could swim, she just cried and cried. This happened at the 4th of July, a family birthday party in September, a restaurant in October, so I almost didn't attend the family Halloween party thinking it wouldn't be worth it. But we went to the party and she was fine and has been ever since. I wonder if she just had to get used to it since it's just the three of us at our house and it's quiet. But now she is very social and isn't easily bothered! In fact as we go through the grocery story she waves at everyone! I am excited to see how she likes the swimming pool this summer!

As first time parents, we have kind of let having a kid paralyze us. Yes, we have made sacrifices to maintain her nap schedule, but I believe wholeheartedly in doing so as it is good for the baby and good for us that she sleeps! As she's gotten older and we are more comfortable as parents we have taken her out to do things and it's usually quite easy. Valencia loves to be outside and to ride in her stroller (she literally shakes with excitement when I unlock the front door to go out). This photo was taken up American Fork Canyon as Cascade Springs when we went to see fall leaves. She loves to ride in the stroller as we take walks around the nearby park and riverside trail.  Most recently we took Valencia to the aquarium for her birthday, and while she wanted to get out of the stroller occasionally, it was so fun and she was so pleasant. Valencia really is such an easy going child.

This photo brings two stories to mind- first, Valencia is also an excellent eater. Her first food was avocado and her favorite foods include sweet potatoes, strawberries, and prunes. At first I bought baby food in jars but eventually I realized how easy and inexpensive it is to make baby food so I have been doing it mostly myself. I make the purees and freeze them in silicone ice cube trays. The only foods that Valencia doesn't like are really sweet things (and maybe it's the texture?) like applesauce and watermelon. So we will just keep trying them until she gets used to them. Because of her allergies and eczema she has only had fruits, vegetables, beans, and goat milk so far. I think she will love when she is able to eat more kinds of food. The photo also shows that Valencia has personality! She is so much fun to play with and loves to interact with others. She is at a stage now where she has a collection of tricks she can put on display (clapping, tongue clicking, waving, shaking her head yes and now, and playing peek-a-boo).

Mommy's cutie is right! Valencia is such a mommy's girl. She always wants me to hold her and me to get her up from her nap and me to be with her. Over the last week it seems like she might be loosening her grip. That is of course, a good thing- to be able to have her dad or someone else hold her, but I hope she will always be a mommy's girl. She is my best little buddy and I want it to stay that way. I want her to know she can trust me and that I will do anything for her.

I love this site of greeting Valencia in the morning. She doesn't yet pull up so she hasn't had to have the mattress lowered yet. She loves to scoot and roll and sit up so you never know what position you may find her in (I've got to get a photo of her sitting with her legs between the bars waiting for me to come get her). She has her bottle in bed and then we usually go straight to the tub. She has come to expect the bottle so she immediately lays back down and reaches for her ba-ba (which will prove difficult in getting the sitting photo).

She truly is happy most of the time, but everyone has their bad days. This photo breaks my heart every time I look at it. She has had some funny little cries over the past year. I could never form letters into the sounds she makes so I won't try but they have ranged from a little pout to large wail. This photo was taken during a tough week and at the end of it I noticed a rather large tooth in the back of her mouth. I think she is currently getting another one. Yikes! Up to this point teething had pretty much been a non-issue so what are the rest going to be like?!

My little baby is turning into a little girl. I love watching her grow and I am so excited for the things we get to do and learn together as she gets bigger. I love you Valencia!

Kennedy Pregnancy Annoucement Mini Session (It's Twins!)

Amber loves Halloween and wanted to announce her pregnancy on social media on the actual holiday so we designed her pregnancy announcement mini session around her cute skeleton shirt. And since she's having not one, but two (!!!) babies, the tiny pumpkins were a must. Not only did Amber and Steve get photos to post online for their friends and family to learn the good news, but they will always have these photos to look back on and remember their own excitement as they learned of the pregnancy and the twins!
